The Spirit of Freedom: What I Love About the USA

Today is the 4th of July—American Independence Day. It’s a day that can bring up many emotions, especially in times of uncertainty or change. But for me, it’s also an opportunity to pause and reflect on something deeply personal: the spirit of freedom I discovered when I moved to the United States over 20 years ago.

Below, I’m sharing a few of the ways this freedom has shaped my life—and how you, wherever you are in the world, might find inspiration in the same ideas.

I’ve also recorded a video sharing more of my story. If you’d like to watch, you’ll find it here:

A Different Kind of Freedom

I grew up in India, a place I still love deeply. But like many collectivist cultures, India emphasizes community, family expectations, and shared values over individual choice.

When I moved to the USA to study film, I found a striking contrast. American culture felt more individualistic. Here, people were encouraged to forge their own paths, to pursue dreams that might seem impractical elsewhere, and to start over at any stage of life.

It’s not that one way is better than the other—both have their gifts and challenges. But this shift taught me so much about possibility and self-belief.

5 Freedoms That Transformed My Life

These are the five freedoms I’ve come to cherish most:

1️⃣ The Freedom to Reinvent Yourself

In America, you’re never “too old” or “too late” to pivot. I’ve met people who started businesses in their 50s, returned to college in their 60s, or launched creative projects in their 70s—and were celebrated for it.

That spirit inspired me to explore new directions in my own life and career. Over time, I built two businesses I love: The Expat Woman and my work as a LinkedIn coach and consultant.

2️⃣ The Freedom of Expression

Coming from a work environment where sharing opinions was discouraged, I was amazed to find that here, everyone was encouraged to speak up.

In the USA, I felt empowered to use my voice—whether on social media, in meetings, or in the community. This freedom helped me find my confidence and step into leadership roles I never imagined.

3️⃣ The Freedom to Pursue Your Passions

In many places, practicality trumps passion. But in America, I saw that you don’t have to choose.

I’ve watched people combine their interests and skills to create work that feels meaningful—whether in entrepreneurship, the arts, or advocacy. That mindset has been a powerful example for me.

4️⃣ The Freedom to Overcome Limiting Beliefs

Moving to the US challenged a lot of internal narratives I carried:

  • That my worth was tied to pleasing others
  • That it was too late to start over
  • That failure was something to hide

Here, I learned to see failure as a stepping stone and self-doubt as something to outgrow. Over time, I replaced limiting beliefs with a more empowered story.

5️⃣ The Freedom to Belong and Contribute

Perhaps the most beautiful freedom of all has been the freedom to belong exactly as I am—and to contribute in a way that feels authentic.

You don’t have to erase your roots or your accent to fit in. You can bring your culture, your skills, and your unique story to the table. In doing so, you help enrich the community around you.

A Personal Reflection on Independence

On this 4th of July, I’m honoring these freedoms—not as abstract ideals, but as real experiences that have transformed my life and work.

If you’re considering a big move or reinvention of your own, I hope my story shows that it’s never too late to find your voice, pursue what lights you up, and create a life on your own terms.
