The Expat Woman

Saskia Rock

I’m a Japan-focused HR and Business Consultant. I work independently and also as Senior Consultant & USA representative at the Japan Consulting Office. I deliver customized training programs and consulting services to help global professionals succeed in Japan’s unique business environment. My focus is on bridging cultural differences, enhancing communication skills, and fostering leadership in Japanese workplaces.

1.Where are you originally from and where you do you currently live?

From Belgium, lived in Japan and now in the SF Bay Area

2. What has been one rewarding thing about living abroad?

The most rewarding thing is personal growth. Living in very different cultures has given me insight into my own, and a lot of respect for other cultures and how we are similar and different.

3. What is one fun or random fact about you that people don’t know?

I played Taiko (traditional Japanese drums) professionally for 5 years

4. What is one tip you would like to share with new expats

Suspend judgement! There are always things that surprise you, even if you’ve lived abroad for a while. Find out why you react negatively to a local custom (know yourself) and adjust your feelings/reactions appropriately.

5. Your personal mantra or quote

You can do this!

6. What do you like about being a member of The Expat Woman?

I like the exposure to a group of very smart entrepreneurial women, there’s so much to learn from everyone’s international journey!
